Developing a Daily Yoga Habit

When I moved in with my boyfriend a couple of months ago I envisioned that I would go to the gym every night after work to avoid traffic and tone my body, but I quickly realized that was impractical.

With three dogs and a hungry man to take care of, it became clear that I could only afford to get home late a couple of nights a week. In addition, my back has been really bothering me for the last couple of months so my ability to run and lift weights has been limited.

So, I came up with Plan B: I would walk/jog with the dogs in the morning. I bought outdoor running gear and started taking them out, but that also proved ineffective. The dogs weren’t interested in running that early in the morning and actually started hiding from me. Plus, it wasn’t helping my back.

So, I came up with Plan C and I think I may have finally found something that works for all of us: doing 30 minutes of yoga in the morning. It provides me with a way to stretch my tight muscles and tone my week ones, as well as to invigorate my day without losing my morning snuggle time with Tater and my mug of coffee.

Here’s what my new morning routine looks like:

5 a.m. – Wake up, feed dogs, drink coffee, watch news and check email

5:30 a.m. – Yoga

6 a.m. – Make breakfast for J and I (this is also new)

6:15 a.m. – Shower and get ready for work

7 a.m. – Give dogs treats and leave for the day
